Of obscure historical interest at best

A scrappy little guy and his friend the big lovable bruiser, a pair shamelessly patterned after the Terence Hill / Bud Spencer movies of the time, are tossed off the kibbutz and find themselves among the dazzling glitter of Tel Aviv... a glitter which in 1975 seems to consist of a few cafés and the big plaza outside city hall. They run into a melodrama of the creakiest kind, in which a kindly old man is going to lose his factory if he doesn't let the villain marry his beautiful daughter, but they clobber the baddies and save the day. Director George Ovadia is more at home in melodrama than in action comedy-- I think that to this day there hasn't been a successful Israeli action comedy-- and he includes a scene of attempted rape that is a bit more than perfunctory. What's of interest? The presence of a few people famous for other things. The leads are Uri Zohar, who retains a large following for films which (unlike this one) he directed himself, and Paul Smith, who went on to international fame in DUNE, MIDNIGHT EXPRESS, and POPEYE among other films. Some songs are performed by Boaz Sharabi, very young here and still attempting to sing in English. Once he gave up the idea of international stardom and concentrated on Hebrew, he consolidated a place for himself at the very top of the Israeli musical pantheon.

The Not-Quite-Magnificent Seven

When his entire workforce (and his little dog!) is massacred by land- grabbing badman Fernando Sancho, fancy-pants lawyer/mine-owner Sean Flynn is schooled in the tough-guy arts by his surviving foreman and the foreman's rowdy former Army buddies.

Despite a terminally low budget and some extreme silliness, there's some mild fun to be had here, including a furniture-busting bar-room brawl, no doubt inspired by the one in Dodge City, which starred Flynn's famous dad. Sancho is always entertaining, even though he always plays the same character in just about everything he's in.

It would appear that the entire music budget was spent on a snappy (though pretty bad!) theme song, with the rest of the score being some pretty obvious library music, which lends to the crackpot nature of the film.

After watching Flynn here, it's easy to see why his career didn't take off. Unfortunately, his career as an adventurer was equally as short- lived.

Stricktly for 60's French filmophiles

"La Pacha", as a whole is OK. It's not quite up to the Melville standard of tough-guy intrigue, but it'll do.

Dampening the initial, promising tempo, unfortunately, is Jean Gabin who seems to be one of those popular actors who's fallen into an artistic pit – and is destined to remain there. If you've seen one of his films, you've seen them all. The exception might be one of his rare comedies, such as "Le Tatoué" (together with Louis de Funès) where he displays an once of versatility. In "La Pacha" however, he's more like a worn-out prop than a necessary figure, and thank God for that for if he'd succeeded in dominating the film too much it would not have been worth seeing at all.

I must also say that Serge Gainsbourg's soundtrack single is annoying: disrupting the story like thrusting a jagged toothpick into your eardrum with un-choreographic jolts, all through the film. It is certainly malplacé and it was quite unnecessary, as the slide-sound mixer was surely available in 1968.

Unbelievably cheap and bizarre from the abrupt and jarring opening credits on....

This jaw-droppingly odd and obscure softcore crime film was on a double-feature cassette with "Axe" and that's how I saw it. It starts off with the most jarring set of opening credits ever. Basically, a booming male voice shouts over a black screen "A Scream in the Streets!" then it abruptly cuts to the Fastest Scrolling Titles Ever superimposed over footage of an unconvincing drag queen killing someone (1970's police show music raging in the background). The film settles down a bit after this into something resembling a story, although I can't remember what it is. My only memory is that it involved a massage parlor and lots of sex scenes (one, at least, verging on hardcore). The men were the ugliest beasts I've ever seen with their clothes off. They couldn't have found more hideous men for this film. Towards the end, the ludicrous drag queen from the opening credits shows up again and implausibly stalks a park while going completely unnoticed. Then something happens and the film ends.... For fans of runny color and grainy cinematography only.

Review :

Nice mix of genres

"What is admirable on the large scale is monstrous on the small."

It's Agatha Christie meets "The Battle of the Bulge" meets... oh you get the picture. Great cast lead by the always fabulous Peter O'Toole who delivers a memorable performance as General Tanz. Also nice to see French veteran actor Philippe Noiret in an ensemble that includes Omar Sharif, Tom Courtenay, Donald Pleasence and Christopher Plummer.

It is tense all the way mostly thanks to the great use of – first Warsaw (and the atrocities performed there) as a backdrop for the story and then we move to Paris where the plot to kill Hitler is nicely interwoven.

"The Night of the Generals" is at parts predictable, yes, (with the great exception of Omar Sharif's final scene) but I guess that's also what makes it kinda' enjoyable at times - at least in the very last scene - when you know what's coming (and boy does it feel good).

Some may find it a bit tedious and yes it is long, but when it was over I knew I would definitely see it again sometime in the future so in short: it works! If you think this movie is your cup of tea, based on the IMDb-information, you're probably right.

Talking' bout a revolution (whisper!)

Probably made to capitalize on the success of Christian-Jaque's "La Tulipe Noire" ,which was also a so-called Dumas adaptation and which also ended when the French Revolution began ;Jacques Perrin is pleasant as a reluctant hero,who,in the beginning of his new "career" ,runs THE operations from a distance.A historic figure (Le Comte D'Artois,Louis the Sixteenth 's brother) appears to help the villain but the scene in Versailles is ludicrous.

As Perrin is no match for Belmondo or Marais,as far as amazing feats are concerned,he makes up for hit with a good sense of humor.The historical background is vague and thin,but why denying yourself an entertaining little swashbuckler?

End of an era

Average Eurospy with an above-average cast

The dependable Kerwin Mathews stars as the Viscount of the title; he is also an insurance investigator, a fierce vigilante, an irresistible Casanova....he is the man who men want to be and women want to be with. He gets caught in the crossfire between two rival gangsters (Fernando Rey and Folco Lulli), and simultaneously endangers and saves a beautiful Parisian stripper (Sylvia Sorrente). Claude Chabrol regular Jean Yanne plays the Viscount's trusty sidekick. The film has some energetic, exciting fight scenes, but setting the climactic shootout in the middle of the night was a mistake; you can hardly tell who's shooting at who! Mostly a run-of-the-mill entry, but cast and locations keep it going. ** out of 4.

Delightful!

A charming remake of "Against All Flags". Doug McClure takes on Errol Flynn's role but this director, as well as the cast have a delightful sense of humor & everyone appears to be having a good time. It's the same movie (almost word for word) but at the same time it's totally different. I hate to admit it but this movie is better than the original. Watching them both in the same day is quite an experience. Two great casts, one fine story yet two different genres.

Brilliant naturalistic touch

Kad budem mrtav i beo is one of the best movies made by great Serbian/Yugoslav director Zivojin Pavlovic, one of the best European directors in second half of the 1960s. His mighty naturalistic approach in films like Povratak, Neprijatelj, Budjenje pacova and Zaseda here achieves a peak through episodic, picaresque story of young would to be singer Dzimi Barka, anarchic individual without specific goal, except not to work (and likes to have sex with any woman whom meet on his ramblings, if she's barely attractive). Film also contains irony approach to Yugoslav partisan mythology, JNA (Yugoslav National Army), work class - all the holy objects, untouchable sacred things of Yugoslav socialistic society. Artisticly and politicly very brave movie, Kad budem mrtav i beo is terrific blend of comedy, drama and, finally, absurd tragedy.

Sam Katzman's take on L.A. 60s youth culture, has some good elements to it

This legendary film is most legendary for its music scenes by the Standells(whose versions of the two songs they do are different from the ones appearing on the soundtrack album!) and the Chocolate Watchband (who are a VERY exciting live band and whose appearance totally justifies their devoted cult following). The actual movie has a kind of "Dragnet" feel, minus Jack Webb's patented hard-boiled ambience. With an actor as impressive as Aldo Ray in the lead--as a fair-minded police chief with a complex family situation who is drawn into the melodramatic situation that provides the film's plot--at least we are provided with a solid performance in a central role. And the young Mimsy Farmer's LSD dance is as bizarre as I'd heard it was. The rest of the film plays like a TV episode with a little extra sleaze added. Director Arthur Dreifuss was no stranger to exploitation films, having directed Black-cast and teen-oriented quickies in the 1940s AND directing the 60s classic The Love-Ins. Producer Sam Katzman had attempted to cash in on youth culture in the mid-50s with his two Bill Haley films and in the early 60s with his two Chubby Checker films (Don't Knock the Twist was excellent!). Frankly, this film takes the same youth/adult conflicts shown in those films and transposes them into 1967 Los Angeles. The difference is that the music is not the main element here-- it's only a backdrop to the Adult/Youth conflict. This film actually means well and presents a fair-minded analysis of the situation, and Ray is quite sympathetic and convincing, but the overall effect is reduced by weakly written roles for the (overage) teenagers and a "riot" that is anti-climactic and a conclusion that seems abrupt. Still the music scenes with the Standells and the Chocolate Watchband are GREAT, as are the songs by the exciting band who performs "Jolene" or something like that in a club scene. Perhaps this could be put on a DVD double-bill with another 60s AIP teen-exploitation flick?

All-time classic

I grew up on this animation, and all I can say is that no classical animation-style Disney movie till date, not Lion King, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame or any other that you can think of comes THIS close as to compare itself with this all-time classic.

A brilliant combination of wonderful voices, magnificent characters, songs that will keep you humming for weeks this is certainly the peek of animation storytelling. It doesn't get any better than this.

I give this one 10/10 without a second thought.

The American Secret Service sends their best agent, OSS 117, to investigate a number of political murders that the police was not able to prevent. Above-average spy thriller

This is one of the later entries in the Eurospy, and more specifically in the OSS 117, cycle, and it's probably one of the better ones as well. The two main reasons for that are: 1) The cast. John Gavin is one of the most capable "pseudo-Bonds" of the era, with a good comic flair; you can see why he actually came very close to being the REAL Bond once, in 1971, before Sean Connery changed his mind and came back for "Diamonds Are Forever", Margaret Lee is playfully attractive, Curt Jurgens makes a suitable villain (just like he would a decade later in "The Spy Who Loved Me"), Robert Hossein plays another soft-spoken evil doctor (just like he did in "OSS 117: Panic In Bangkok"), and even the luscious Luciana Paluzzi of "Thunderball" fame is around, though only for about 10 minutes and then she vanishes. 2) Unlike many Eurospy films, this one is not driven by fight scenes at every opportunity. There are some fights, to be sure, and they're pretty good, but most of the time the film is just trying to tell a story. Admittedly the climactic fall of the criminal "Organization" should have been more spectacular - maybe the producers ran out of budget by that point? **1/2 out of 4.

I was entertained

I wouldn't say this movie is "bad" because I was entertained for the most part though probably not in the way the director intended. The cast is pretty hilarious. Just watching these four "characters" wandering about is a sight for sore eyes. I liked the Kissinger-look-alike Scientist, the white-machinist-looking businessman Stanton (reminds me of the guy who does/did the horoscope for The Onion), and especially his buddy who stays behind looking over the shoulder of "Dave" while making the most inane comments and looking cheerful throughout. The memory of the women standing by the computers out in back brings tears to my eyes. There's also an pseudo-intelligent little twist towards the end - and the ending was cool.

Well worth the watch!

This is an excellent spy thriller. The plot gets tangled at times, like what was that all about at the airport and the rifle? Sinatra is great and a well chosen international cast. It may be a B grade movie but you will certainly be entertained. The director uses a plethora of different camera angles which I thought were very good. It is too bad they didn't know how to end it.

Alaina and Haji shine in sexy soap opera

Good Morning... and Goodbye! is one of the movies from Russ Meyer's soap opera period. It isn't really a comedy as such; it's more of an extremely over-the-top melodrama. It's basically about a rich but impotent husband (Stuart Lancaster from various Meyer vehicles) and his sexually dissatisfied wife (Alaina Capri from Common Law Cabin) who, due to the lack of sexual fireworks at home, takes a blue collar lover. She does not hide this fact from her husband at all. This leads to all manner of confrontations where men and women talk harshly to one another Meyer style.

Jack Moran the screenwriter of Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! Is the writer here and it shows. The dialogue is filled with the gloriously vicious put downs and nonsensical hipster talk that we've come to expect. Alaina Capri in particular gets a barrel-load of great lines and she delivers them with gusto. Capri is awesome in this film. She is without doubt one of the sexiest women to grace a Meyer picture. Her pneumatic figure, coupled with her strong beautiful features, make her a perfect super-bitch for an RM production. Meyer, it goes without saying, photographs her to perfection and she owns every scene she is in. She isn't really an actress but she delivers her lines in that curious way that all women seem to in RM productions – half shouting, half sneering – which for some unknown reason always works brilliantly. Alaina Capri is truly the most underrated Russ Meyer actress. She just oozes charismatic sex appeal. And all her bits seem to be in the right places. Another Meyer regular Haji appears too in a memorable role as a supernatural sorceress. Haji was the most quirky of all Meyer women, a true free spirit who is clearly in her element in this movie as a creature of nature at one with the forest. She interacts with Stuart Lancaster's impotent husband and gives him back his missing sex drive. Lancaster is, as usual, great but RM productions are always really about the leading ladies.

Technically it's up to the usual high standards we expect from a Meyer flick. His photography and quick editing are all great once more. It isn't one of his more outrageous films as there isn't much nudity and the violence is restricted to a couple of bloody punch ups. Even the story is fairly routine. However, don't worry this is a great RM movie. Alaina Capri and Haji are fabulous. Jack Moran delivers another bunch of great lines. And Russ films it all with loving care. Just great.
