enjoyable. Follows the books very closely, as compared to tv series

Julio Aleman gives his own personal touch to the character of Juan. Angelica Maria was perfect for the Monica role. Plot follows very closely the story as written by Caridad Bravo Adams, up until almost the end of the second book. Movie is only an hour and a half long so it cannot cover the complexities of book 3. Understandably. Good enjoyable movie, whether you have read the books or seen the tv series or not.

Review :

On the choice of partners in intimate relationships

The DVD Liefdesbekentenissen (Love confessions) is not a social film, which is my true love. I acquired the DVD by accident, since it was included in a package deal with another film. Nevertheless the film is sufficiently unique to merit a review. The makers Verstappen and De la Parra with their company Scorpio Films have made a name in the production of shallow films. In fact the couple is typical for the part of the Dutch cultural elite, that likes to shock and ridicule without really aiming to threaten the establishment. This is one of their earlier films, and still quite decent. It is said that the couple was inspired by the nouvelle vague and notably Godard. A main character is the well-known Dutch singer Ramses Shaffy, who at the time was a youth icon. Other characters are Shireen Strooker (who also has been active in the collective experiment Werktheater) and Kitty Courbois (also in the film Op Hoop van Zegen). The film theme concerns the choice of partners in intimate relationships. This was elaborated in an era, where the social control and the influence of the church were still palpable. In this sense, the film is actually breaking taboos, and dissoluteness seems to be advocated above being faithful. The story revolves around a writer, Frank, living in Amsterdam, who is unsure in the choice of his future girlfriend. In a dreamlike scene, he envisions himself as a pasha in his harem. He wonders what the harem ladies are thinking, and feels dissatisfied with the old groove. He expects to gain a more fulfilled life in monogamy, but this requires making choices. In real life he writes platonic letters to his female editor, Marsha, and she replies with clear advances. He ponders: "We don't want prescribed and predictable relationships, but an unknown future with open endings". Life should be an adventure. However, he also feels charmed by a shop keeper in the neighborhood, Marina, where he occasionally drinks coffee and chats with female customers. This woman is straightforward, doesn't like false tricks, backdoor struggle and competition or provocations. By the use of manipulations the writer manages to send Marsha and Marina to London. At the same time, an English acquaintance of Marina visits Amsterdam. Actually Marina doesn't master the English language, so the origin of their relationship remains a mystery. Afterwards, Marina doesn't appreciate the manipulations of Frank, whereas Marsha does master the English language and feels attracted to the Englishman. Marina becomes the appendix of the trio. Although she doesn't understand the Englishman, she still believes to be in love with him. However, when Marsha informs her about Franks' feelings, they immediately form an intimate relationship. The story is embellished with vivid pictures of Amsterdam and London. In spite of the theme, the passions and emotions remain on a low level, and the emphasis is on the intellectual analysis. The final judgment depends on your individual affinities. Personally, I don't see the logic in the conduct of the main characters, and it all seems somewhat crooked. The relations seem unsustainable. For me the film did not awaken any new insights. Of course, it all boils down to the risk level that you are willing and able to take. And on the energy and time available for investment in simmering conflicts. Indeed the spirit of the time resulted in communes with multiple and undefined intimate ties, in the early seventies. The revolt of 68 was partly simply a middle-class emancipation. Anyway, this perspective is not to my liking.

Excellent Political Spaghetti Western By Damiano Damiani!

Damiano Damiani's masterpiece "El Chuncho Quién Sabe?" aka. "A Bullet For The General" of 1967 is a very political Spaghetti Western set in the Mexican Revolution. A quite brutal tale about ideals, greed, friendship and selfishness, is not only a very entertaining Spaghetti Western, but also a unique study of an idealistic man's struggle between his greed and desire for wealth on the one hand, and his beliefs and ideals on the other hand.

El Chuncho (Gian Maria Volontè) is a bandit and revolutionary with a strong fondness for women, alcohol and cigars. Along with his slightly insane, but religious and very idealistic brother El Santo (Klaus Kinski), he leads a gang of bandits with beliefs, who help the poor and rob the government's army to sell the weapons to the revolutionary army. When the gang is joined by Bill Tate, an American who, due to his youth, is just referred to as "El Nino" by El Chuncho and his fellow Mexican bandidos, the gang leader starts to befriend with the gringo. El Nino, however is basically almost the opposite of El Chuncho, he doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke and he doesn't waste his time with women, and neither does he believe in any causes or ideals, the only thing he is interested in is quick and good money. His friendship to the baby-faced but selfish and cold-blooded Nino, becomes a breaking test for Chuncho, who is torn between his greed and his ideals.

Although Sergio Leone and Sergio Corbucci are two of my favorite directors of all-time, and their movies "Giù La Testa" ("Duck You Sucker", Leone) and "Il Mercenario" ("The Mercenary", Corbucci), are two awesome movies, and furthermore there are quite a few more excellent Mexican Revolution Spaghetti Westerns , I would name "A Bullet for the General" as my favorite of the Mexican-Revolution-themed Spaghetti Westerns. The acting in this movie is superb. Gian Maria Volontè played in four Spaghetti Westerns and each one of them is a masterpiece. After his excellent performances in "A Fistful Of Dollars", "For A Few Dollars More" and Sergio Sollima's "Faccia A Faccia"/"Face To Face", Volontè is superb as El Chuncho, the most lovable Spaghetti Western character he played. Klaus Kinski is great as always, the character of the rather crazy but idealistic El Santo is quite unusual, since Kinski's roles in Italian Westerns were, with a few exceptions, normally those of extremely cold blooded and selfish killers, who didn't think of anybody but themselves. Lou Castel perfectly fits into the role of baby-faced El Nino, and he manages to point out his character's cleverness and selfishness in a very good way. The directing by Damiano Damiani is brilliant and so is the cinematography. I would have rated this 10/10 if it wasn't for he one minor flaw: The score by Ennio Morricone and Louis Bavalov is good, but it is no quite as great as it could have been as it can't compete with the brilliance of other Morricone scores. Nevertheless, an excellent film!

A brutal, witty and very political Spaghetti Western, "A Bullet For The General" is an excellent film that genre-fans, and film buffs in general should not miss!

Review :

Karl Malden steals the show!

Big, colorful, lavish, HOTEL is a very nice movie. It's set in New Orleans' French Quarter, and Warner Brothers even managed to get the NOPD star-and-crescent badges on the police officers' uniforms correct...a nice attention to detail. Even the music was properly scored to the locales depicted...another plus. True, most of the movie was shot on WB's back lots, but some of the French Quarter scenes were actually shot in New Orleans.

An all-star cast performs more than adequately, but Karl Malden literally steals the movie! He plays a sneak-thief named "Keycase", and he obviously played his role with relish. In one wonderful scene, he surveys his loot after a harrowing evening's thieving, and sadly mutters "It's those damned credit cards!" If you remember that Malden later became the American Express man ("Don't leave home without it!"), this scene is priceless.

Another classic is when the cops finally get him. Handcuffed to a NOPD officer, Malden can't help but swipe a hotel ashtray as he's being led to jail...grinning happily the whole time.

It's great entertainment, and I rate it 9 out of 10.

When a series of mysterious murders begins to occur and some of her performers die gruesomely, her profits soar. She hires high-wire walker Frank Hawkins, impressed by the handsome and muscular young man. They begin an affair which arouses her previous lover Durando's jealousy. When Durando is found dead shortly afterward, the other performers begin to take alarm, as a mysterious killer is obviously loose in their midst. Many suspect Monica herself of the killings, especially Matilda, who has set her sights on Monica's new lover. At this point, Monica's unruly, sixteen-year-old daughter Angela is expelled from school for being incorrigible, and Monica is forced to take her into the circus, allowing her to become the partner of knife-thrower Gustavo. Meanwhile, the dead bodies continue to pile up...

Berserk - Where on Earth Did They Get that Title from?

Old Joan Crawford, dressed in tights and a ringmaster's coat throughout much of the film, plays Monica Rivers, circus owner and apparently heart-breaker to men decades younger than herself. Watch Joan cavort first with Michael Gough with lots of suggestions about their business and personal lives merging(fortunately for Gough this does not last too long as he soon finds himself nailed to another post). So with Gough gone, he-man Ty Hardin, a new high wire act who arrives after the old one hangs himself while performing, comes into the picture, no shirt half the time and all, and makes his moves for the less-than-sexy sixty plus year-old. Watching Crawford and her beaus work with heavily-laden dialog laced with absurd innuendo was the highlight of this film as it was just so preposterous. She looks ancient and yet acts like she is still 25! Anyway, the film itself is one of those films that is so very fun to watch just for those elements already mentioned, the then grisly murders as circus people start to die off, and the lush colour used in the film. The settings of the circus are believably done and Herman Cohen, the producer, always knew how to put on a good show. I even enjoyed some of the circus acts that were intermittently laced in the picture. The rest of the cast is very able with Gough, always good, and George Claydon playing Bruno excelling. Lovely Diana Dors and Judy Geeson also star. Hardin was really quite bad but I really enjoyed his trapeze act at the film's end. While the story can only be classified as silly and absurd, the ending seems way too abrupt even for this film. The film seems to be going along almost effortlessly - Joan prancing about working her guys over(Yuck!) and circus performers dying

  • then a quick ending that comes out of left field. Despite the many

shortcomings, Berserk - why the heck is it named that? - is a whole lot of fun and is very similar, as some other reviewers have noted, to Straight-Jacket, Crawford's film for William Castle.

Review :

One of the best and most well made trashy exploitation flicks!

This is a great film, if you are into 1960's exploitation films, which I am.This movie actually (almost) has a recognizable plot, and is simply brilliant for it's relevant irony (the parents are freaking out about their kids learning about sex and birth control, yet they are the ones getting in trouble!). It is all such a cliche (now) in real life, yet in movies it is rarely done. This is a fantastic film of it's genre. It is a non-gorey, post "Blood Feast" Herschel Gordon Lewis masterpiece. It is one of those films that is so bad it's good, but it is almost REALLY good!
