Review :

A classic!

This is one of those dramas that is never dated. No matter how many times I watch it, it never loses its magic. Having memorized virtually every line in the movie, I continue to enjoy it more with each viewing.

The 1966 masterpiece, which takes place in a fictitious small town in Mississippi during the depression, was only released on DVD in late 2003. It should be a part of everyone's collection.

The characters and the setting are remarkable in their realism. Natalie Wood's vulnerable bimbo may be the best role of her career (and is Alva Star a perfect name, or what?). Kate Reid, as the middle aged mother who runs a shabby rooming house and quasi-brothel, delivers a rock solid performance. The younger daughter, played by child actress Mary Badham (of "To Kill a Mockingbird" fame) masterfully brings to the screen a complex blend of childlike naivete and cynical worldliness. Redford is memorable in his role as a newcomer on the scene, a temporary guest who clearly has no idea of the conflicted and tragic relationship he is destined to find with an enchanted-but-stained Natalie Wood and her wretched kin.

Indeed, the entire supporting cast in this torrid Tennessee Williams story put in star-quality performances. Collectively, they make this story unforgettable.

Little sister "Willie" is fond of calling her seductive older sister "the main attraction" - a description that could also be used to describe this amazing film.

A must for A-M fans

I am a huge Ann-Margret fan, and I finally got to see this movie, not available on video, on AMC. The 'plot' concerns good girl journalist Kelly Olsson (A-M's real last name) who wants to be published in "Girl-lure" men's magazine, and she wants her story published, not her photo. She writes a lurid expose of a wild swinger girl and tells the horny editor the girl in the story is her, to try to get it printed. So, she has to spend the rest of the movie convincing the Girl-lure staff she is for real. Please note that this plot summary makes the movie's plot sound much more coherent than it actually is.

Terrible continuity, the main actors are nothing special, very corny jokes, and there seems to be no discernable script. However, who cares? We've got an opening montage of Ann-Margret singing the title song and jumping on a trampoline wearing a black catsuit, turning on the sex appeal full force. We've got a house she lives in with a bunch of beatniks including the dance group billed in the opening credits as the"Swinger's Dozen" who spend their time doing choreographed dance routines in the living room, and when A-M passes through, she just has to join in and go-go dance. For the guys, we have A-M covered in paint and used as a human paintbrush (though not nude as the Playboy pictorial would have you beleive-sorry guys, Playboy doctored the photos) by a bunch of beatniks wearing jungle loinclothes. We have Edith Head doing the absolutely to-die-for 60's costumes, some of which are showcased in those photo montages. We have A-M wearing a different outrageous 60's hair extension/style in almost every scene. We have a magazine headquarters obviously modeled on Playboy Enterprises where models walk around in bikinis and there is a framed photo on the wall of a groovy chick that actually rotates on a mechanical roller to show a different model every 5 seconds. And that's just for starters.

George Sidney directed the movie and it shows. He was the director of Bye Bye Birdie, totally smitten with Ann-Margret, who saw her talent when she was still fairly unknown and used his own money to shoot a new beginning and ending for BBB showcasing A-M. He was completely in love with A-M, and so for all the guys out there who feel the same way about her, watch this movie and you'll be in heaven.

Acceptable Paella/Spaghetti Western about a band of Bushwackers led by Bill Anderson who commit robberies and killings

Spanish/Italian co-production about some ex-Confederate soldiers form a bloody band led by Bill Anderson (Armando Calvo) and his bandits (familiar faces from Chorizo Western as Luis Barboo, Jose Jaspe , Frank Braña , Alfonso De La Vega) , they have frightened the region of Springfield with continuous robberies . They are a little-known band of Civil War fighters known as Bushwhackers . They skirmish then spend long hours hiding . Therefore the authorities (Angel Menendez , Jesus Puente, Miguel Del Castillo) and Sheriff (Antonio Pica) decide to seek help from the Pinkerton detective agency . Besides, on the little town appears Ringo (usual Spaghetti hero Peter Martell), an ex-captain in the army of the north , who also goes behind the band . But Ringo receives unexpected help from rogue Dan Samuelson (habitual nasty , though here playing an agreeable character , Piero Lulli) to achieve their goal , which is simply to try to stop the band before they are caught and hanged by the law, as Allan wants to achieve especially apprehend Kidd (Paolo Hertz), the youngest member of the outlaws , so both join forces, the trouble is that maybe he is found that can end badly . Exciting film based on historical events set during post American Civil War (1861-1865) in which the Bushwhackers use guerrilla warfare to destroy Yankee targets and led by men set on revenge, they made a violent raid into Kansas , taking place the famous Lawrence Massacre , carried out by Bill Anderson and Quantrill .

This meaty Western contains an interesting but twisted plot , thrills , action , double-crosses , violence , shoot'em up and results to be quite entertaining . But overall Ringo the Lone Rider" or "Two Brothers, One Death" is entertaining to watch , with some good moments, and against the backdrop of aftermath American Civil War that gives more firmness to the story . The movie deals with historical events and characters such as the Bushwhackers who are irregulars loyal to the South led by Bill Anderson and also appears the notorious Pinkerton Agency . It is also remarkable violence executed by band Bill , who doesn't care to kill some poor and peaceful Mormons to achieve their goals . The picture efficiently describes the atmosphere of violence in which was set the post Civil War dealing with fights between Bushwhackers versus Jayhawkers . It's a moving western with breathtaking confrontation between the protagonist , Peter Martell and Piero Lulli against Anderson band formed by customary Spanish secondaries such as Armando Calvo , Jose Jaspe , Alfonso De La Vega and Frank Braña . Nice production design creating an evocative scenario with luminous outdoors , mountains , rocky grounds under a shinning sun and fine sets by Cubero and Galicia from Colmenar Viejo , Madrid, La Pedriza , and Hoyo de Manzanares's Western-film town . Atmospheric and thrilling musical score in Spaghetti style by Manuel Parada , including a catching leitmotif .

The motion picture was well written and produced by ordinary Eduardo Manzanos Brochero ; being professionally directed and in his own personal style by Rafael Romero Marchent . Rafael Romero Marchent was born on May 3, 1926 in Madrid, Spain. He is a director and actor, known for Garringo, Un Dolar de Recompensa , or Manos Torpes . Rafael Romero Marchent was brother of Joaquin Luis Romero , who was the first to shoot Westerns in Spain . At first, Rafael Romero began in films as an actor, but when his career began to wane, he preferred to spend time behind the camera . Rafael is an expert writer and director of Spaghetti Western as proved in ¨Two crosses on Danger Pass¨, Cry for revenge¨, ¨Two guns for two twins¨ and ¨Sartana Kills Them All¨ or ¨Un par Asesinos¨. While his brother Joaquin Marchent is deemed the Paella Western's best director , his first film was ¨El Coyote¨ and the sequel titled ¨Revenge of Coyote¨ shot in Mexico ; after that , he filmed ¨The shadow of Zorro¨ and ¨Revenge of Zorro¨, he went go directing Western as ¨ Riding to death ¨ , ¨Adventures in the West¨ , ¨Three good men¨, ¨Sabor Venganza ¨ and the most popular and violent ¨Condenados a Vivir¨ . Bad Bad Bad

The only reason I bought this movie was, it had Raquel Welch in it. Raquel Welch was very young in this movie and looked awesome. However after that this movie was bad. First think that struck my mind that it was filmed in Italy which was a turn off. The second and main reason it had no subplot. It starts out as a man who claims to have seen a murder. Then he claims that Raquel Welch also seen the murder. But the only thing he sees when he sees Raquel is dreams. The gentlemen Uncle who doesn't talk exprees he feelings by using firecrackers. The bottom line was this movie was bad. It doesn't keep your interested and I loss interested in it 15 minutes in.

Weather Report......a tsunami set to strike Malibu.

Perfect posture and great bodies dominate in this oddball Tony Curtis comedy. Just about everyone in these reels of celluloid has a superb physique: Claudia Cardinale, Sharon Tate, and even the muscle men pumping iron on the beach. Hard to believe fact: this movie was based on a novel! Some of the bloated beach bums must have stumbled in from a "method" acting class. The leader savors every line of dialog as if it was Milton or Shakespeare. Weird. The setting is radiant to the eye. The special effects people deserve a gold metal for delivering some of the most realistic shots, up to that time, of the ground cracking open and an upscale villa sliding and tumbling down a steep embankment and into the surf. Impressive. It's sad to see Sharon Tate--so young and pretty--just three years before the Manson Gang got their hands on her. Miss Tate's character is skilled in many physical pursuits: trampoline and skydiving included. In one improbable scene, she saves Tony Curtis, James Bond-like, by strapping herself to the free-falling con-man. Miss Cardinale has the curves to match her rival, but she is straddled with shrill dialog and a cranky demeanor. Jim Backus plays himself and performs his "Mister Magoo" routine. I think the movie works so well because it perfectly captures the Southern California scene at a time when many things were changing--and not always for the best. The mid-sixties was the last gasp of a more innocent time and cinema. View after midnight--it rocks.

Adequate and nothing more

At the very beginning of the film, there is a little prologue that is all written in Italian--and so I had no idea whether or not this was important. I saw the film on a disc that included: 7 Dollars on Red / Apocalypse Joe / Bounty Killer / Minnesota Clay. Perhaps if there are other versions out there that they will have captioning for the portion. As for the rest of the film, like most Italian westerns we get here in the States, it's dubbed.

"Seven Dollars on the Red" begins with a group of bandits slaughtering a household. A young boy is left unharmed and the bandit leader decides to adopt the kid. Little does the bandit know that the boy's father was not home and vows to do everything he can to find the boy. But, everything is not good enough and years pass--and the nice kid slowly evolves into a vicious jerk just like his foster dad.

If you are looking for an Italian film of the quality of a Sergio Leone or even a Sergio Carbucci film, then keep looking. This one is actually a bit funny, since the guns didn't even use blanks--and the actors had to pretend that the guns were firing something. However, the gun sounds were added later and it comes off as kind of funny seeing the men jerking the guns even though nothing is coming out (even a blank will appear out of the barrel the same as a normal bullet). Plus, they also seemed to have tried to save money by eliminating blood--making the bullet-riddled bodies oddly clean and without bullet holes. The film also has only fair music--nothing particularly haunting or memorable about the tunes. The bottom line is that the Italians made hundreds of westerns--some good, some bad and some ugly. I'd rank this among the ugly--kind of cheap but reasonably entertaining if you are looking for just a time-passer.

Great fun movie with a great cast

During World War II, Major Reisman is called to a high level meeting to discuss his next mission – to train a group of soldiers and prepare them for a mission behind enemy lines. However the `soldiers' that Reisman has been assigned are all sentenced to death or life in prison for their crimes. The mission is a suicide mission on a French chateau where German top brass will be, the aim being to kill as many as possible. But before the mission, the group must pass a training to be considered for pardoning.

Well known by all men everywhere, this is less a serious war movie and more an enjoyable ensemble romp through a training camp, with the final third being the mission itself. This is the film's strength – the training sections are very enjoyable and good fun to watch. The mission is punchy and dramatic and works very well as the conclusion to the film rather than the whole film itself (which other `mission' films have to do). The training is slick and enjoyable, not only it is occasionally quite funny but it is also consistently amusing and exciting at turns.

The film's main selling point (increasingly so) is the all star cast, all of whom do really good work. Marvin is tough in the lead and he is well supported by Borgnine, Kennedy, Ryan and Jaeckel playing the other officers. Of the prisoners Cassavetes steals the show with his cocky Franko although he is not short of famous support. Sutherland (although not well known at the time) is good comic relief, Savalas is a little too heavy for the film but adds menace, Bronson is good value, Brown is strong and is well known due to a weepy Billy Crystal! The rest of the dozen give good performances, but I'll be honest and say that the famous faces stuck in my mind more.

Overall this is not a wonderful film and, as a war movie it isn't the best `mission' movie you could find (simply cause the mission is quite short and straightforward. However it is a fun movie that never drags despite the slightly longer than normal running time for this type of movie. The training section and the mission itself combine to form an enjoyable film that is driven by a great cast playing good characters.

Middle-aged banker Arthur Hamilton is given the opportunity to start a completely new life when he receives calls from his old friend Charlie. The only problem is that Charlie is supposed to be dead. Hamilton is eventually introduced to a firm that will fake his death and create an entirely new look and life for him. After undergoing physical reconstruction surgery and months of training and psychotherapy, Hamilton returns to the world in the form of artist Tony Wilson. He has a nice house in Malibu and a manservant, a company employee who is there to assist him with his adjustment. He finds that the life he had hoped for isn't quite what he expected and asks the company to go through the process with surprising results.

Seconds : a realistic tale of suffocating paranoia

"Seconds" is a fascinating and engrossing realistic fantasy tale that deals with the question of the identity and above all, the exploration of madness symbolized by the search of material happiness and the search of eternal youth which leads to the most claustrophobic fate. "Please be yourself !" can be the warning of this film. The innovative and the post-expressionist cinematography of James Wong Howe (the use of the 9.7 mm fish-eye lens, extreme chiaroscuro, tilted low angle shots, hand-held camera shots) combined with the stylish graphic work of Saul Bass and a cold, taut and harsh music of Jerry Goldsmith makes it like a Faustian tragedy with a Kafkaesque approach. The whole film is about distortion. The twisted vision of the main character trapped in his own nightmarish world, full of "re-borns" and "employees". But the real nightmare is the dreary routine of his existence. For instance, the scene of the train when Arthur Hamilton is reading his newspaper and feels suddenly sick with his life. We see very short shots of the train window and his sad face. The more oppressive scenes are silent just extreme close-ups of faces. Perhaps, the best film directed by John Frankenheimer and the best paranoiac film ever created. "Classic" is a weak word to define this masterpiece of modern terror. "Seconds" is the last film of the John Frankenheimer's paranoiac trilogy, without forgetting : "The Manchurian Candidate" and "Seven days in may".

He's not a silent stranger

"Dio li crea... io li ammazzo!" introduces Dean Reed as an unusual hero for the genre. Instead of the bearded, silent stranger Eastwood and Nero portrayed, Slim "il Californiano" (Reed) dances with the ladies, has a kind smile for everyone, likes fancy dress and hardly stops talking. The villain (great: Peter Martell) owns a walking stick with hidden gadgets while the ladies fall in love with young Reed's handsome looks - it's almost a bit like James Bond. But surprisingly, this movie develops step by step into a tough western with the typical ingredients of the time, including quite a lot of violence. Slim is hired to clean up the town, but he's framed for a robbery himself and thrown into prison. His best friend is tortured hanging from the ceiling. But when the going gets tough... you know the tune. So: some oddities, but "Dio li crea..." finally delivers.

It Can't Ride With 'The Magnificent Seven'

One of my all-time favourite music scores is Elmer Bernstein's thrilling theme from 'The Magnificent Seven'. I was practically dancing in my seat when I got to hear it again during the opening sequence in 'Return Of The Seven', the first of 3 sequels to John Sturges' classic western. My enthusiasm was short-lived. Bernstein and star Yul Brynner are the only major players to return for this 1966 rehashing of the first picture. Their work is solid---even though they just do the same things they did in Sturges' film---but writer Larry Cohen and director Burt Kennedy don't have any new ideas of their own.

It's impossible to replace actors like Steve McQueen, Eli Wallach, James Coburn, and Charles Bronson with Warren Oates, Fernando Rey and a slew of unknowns, but that must have been the best they could do. It's just as foolish to remake the remake (let's not forget that 'Magnificent' was a redo of Kurosawa's 'The Seven Samurai'). A completely different story might have worked better. Since only 3 of the original 7 survived---and neither McQueen or Horst Buchholz return as Vin or Chico)---you can't help noticing that the B team is just not good enough to match what the A team did with Brynner in 1960.

So brace yourself as Chris Adams (Brynner) and company ride into battle against Mexican bandits all over again. This time they've got to save Chico and the other male villagers they saved years before. Same result? Not telling, but there are 1 or 2 fun moments along the way. Any excuse to hear Bernstein's music is a good excuse, especially when the movie is on free TV. All the same, I think I'll skip the other sequels. 'Return Of The Seven' isn't horsepoo, but it's certainly not worthy of riding with 'The Magnificent Seven' either.

Review :

A wonderful adventure movie

Anthony Quinn and Rita Hayworth give us their usual excellent level of acting, and Rosanna Schiaffino as Arlette is wonderful. The script has some holes but that is more than made up by the wonderful performances of the actors and the beautiful locations. A sometimes underrated movie that is quite engrossing.

Anthony Quinn plays a pawn in a Napoleonic game of world chess. The high seas action is sometimes overshadowed by his relationships on shore and both make for captivating viewing.

I would recommend this movie.

Suspense and Atmosphere on Remote Japanese Island

On the ferry to a small Japanese island, a local asks a mysterious stranger why he is returning. As the story unfolds, we learn about a brutal, isolated war time penal colony for boys the local reform school could not handle...and a mysterious incident that is going to be resolved.

Although this particular story is fiction, the Japanese have a long cultural tradition of "Shimanagashi" (banishment to a remote island) as a correctional method. As such, the story is quite believable in a Japanese context.

The atmosphere at the beginning of the movie was great! The build-up and development of the story is excellent. The photography (shot of Hachijojima south of Tokyo in the Pacific Ocean) of the isolated colony for "the worst of the boys" is beautiful. Some viewers may find the movie too brutal.

Sarno's Erotic Camera

This is a striking feature by Joe Sarno that displays to the full extent his skills in high-key black and white lighting, effective mise en scène, and casting and directing actors. The series of models parading in and out of fashion photographer Henning's life and bedroom (in a not so subtle reference to the film BLOW UP), offers the perfect opportunity for a cinematic and erotic exploration of the ideal male fantasy, which is total artistic and sexual command of a stable of beautiful and willing women. The nymph who enters his life, occupies his spare room, and slowly turns his ideal setup upside down is yet another component to this fantasy, at at least for the viewer, as it allows for girl on girl scenes in which the models are further dominated sexually, and in which there is more sexual variety and kinkiness at play. Sarno's use of the female face captures the erotic more fully than many films which are fully graphic, and the psychological components of sexual desire are both varied and realistic.

Indeed, viewing the film made me understand fully what it would be like to be a male with the desire to sexually dominate a series of women, as it presents such a fantasy outside of moral concerns or even social concerns, but purely as a giddy lifestyle of pleasure from which no escape would ever be desired. Oddly enough, this also gives the women, who are otherwise so individual and so uniquely beautiful, an interchangeability that can be chilling to the heart of a romantic. There is a Sadean dimension to the pleasure that erases the importance of the women, even as they are made full subjects in terms of their equal and complicit engagement in the acts which they crave.

The man always remains intact and individual, insofar as he is the only male on screen in a sea of women, and because he is a complete person and an artist in his own right, liking sex but not needing it to complete and define him. The women, on the other hand, have no identity separate from what sex gives them (their inside dimension) or what their appearance offers to the screen and to his camera (their outside dimension). They are eaten up by both cameras and by the male gaze, in such a voracious way that there is nothing left to hide, and in this feat lies Sarno's skill as a director, that he can lay this vulnerability bare and get these actresses to go to places that you normally don't see women go in movies.

Therefore, the goal of the photographer in this film (to capture something in women that is fully erotic, fully female in the darkest sense), is met successfully by the protagonist's camera, and also by Sarno's camera. Even as the photographer in the film complains that he can't capture on film the expression that his lover has when she is transported by pleasure, Sarno's camera shows us this expression, and tells us at the same time that we are watching something extraordinary.

Story of love and war

Touching story about love of a young romantic man (Zhenia), who is a soldier of Guard Mortar Division (Division of "Katusha" Reactive Mortars) and a girl-telegraphist (Little Zhenia) at the last months of WW II. Some funny scenes from Soviet Army everyday life however was considered by former USSR bureaucracy as offensive to national military history, thus the movie was not allowed for many years. Watching the movie you see the war by eyes of indeed a Moscow boy who being a soldier is out of war in his dreams. He does not let the war into his soul making feats of arms and not understanding this. The last winter of the greatest war is over, a new spring with new dreams comes on, and it seems that all troubles left behind and only best days of love and happiness wait for Zhenia and Little Zhenia, but even the last days of the war can be tragic.

True story with disturbing ending.

Yngsjömordet is an adaption of a true murder story that happened 1889 in Yngsjö, a small village in Skåne (the southernmost county in Sweden) It is one of the most talked about murder cases in Swedish history mainly due to the sexual relationship between the murderer and his mother. Norman Bates was apparently not the first psychopath with a complicated relationship to his mother. Several authors have written books inspired by the events and the story has been adapted to film twice. The reason why writers and filmmakers come back to this story might be the fact that nobody really knows what actually happened that night. There were no witnesses except the mother and the son... A short English summary of the real events can be found on Wikipedia etc. You might not want to read it until you have watched the film as it might spoil the plot. But be sure to go there afterwards and look at the real faces of the murderer and the victim. The similarities with the two women actors were a bit chocking to me. Very good casted! Arne Mattson again shows that he has talent. While there might be one or two sudden cuts that could be done better the camera work is creative. The film is almost Bergmanesque at times. I especially liked the opening. Not a single word is uttered for several minutes. The camera tells everything and when the first word is uttered it continues a story already told in pictures. After the opening the film moves on to the court room. For a few minutes I feared the film was going to be a court room drama. But it is just a short sequence. Instead of seeing the courtroom and hearing the witnesses we see what the witnesses saw the night of the murder. And afterwards we see what really happened. The execution at the end was very well made and actually disturbing.

I think the actors performed well, especially Gunnel Lindblom who performs the mother. Gösta Ekman who plays the son should also be mentioned. He later became a famous actor here in Sweden, mainly in comedies (The Apple War, The Man Who Quit Smoking etc), but here he shows he can play a psychopath too.

A Delight

A fast-paced heist comedy, so innocent that nothing is even "stolen". When Jim Hutton, harrassed employee of the Bureau of Engraving, already on the outs with his boss, inadvertently takes 50,000 dollars and shreds them in his garbage disposal, he breaks back in to reprint the money. However, one thing leads to another and he eventually ends up with a gang of misfits, each of whom needs something and jumps at the opportunity to print their own money. Jack Gilford and Victor Buono grab their roles by the throat and they provide a great balance, each singlehandedly preventing the other from stealing the movie altogether out from under the others' noses. Everyone does a good job. The script is solid and plot-driven. Some of the laughs are diluted by appearing in so many other places in movies or tv in the last three decades, but the movie still remains fresh and funny, and makes a good diversion for a dull afternoon. It's too bad movies like this aren't made any more.
