"No more booze for me and no more boyfriends for you!"

You know you're in for a treat as soon as the montage of split-levels and a faux-Sammy Davis Jr. theme song ("Let's swap partners/Here's the game/Suburban roulette") hit the screen. This touching family drama opens with the Fisher family moving to a new suburban home, in hopes that the change of scenery will do them good--or, as Mr. Fisher tells Mrs. Fisher, "No more booze for me and no more boyfriends for you!"

As you can imagine, that doesn't last long once the Fishers fall in with their neighbors, the Elstons and the Conleys. The Elstons are the real fun couple in the subdivision: disdainful tramp "Mattress Back" Margo and her husband, leering blond stud Ron. Martini-fueled pool parties abound, as Ron embarks on an affair with the Jiffy Pop-haired Mrs. Fisher and Mr. Fisher sweats a lot and passes the time getting wasted with self-hating lush Fran Conley. Mrs. Conley resembles Judy Garland in full suburban housewife drag, which may be why the Conley's eldest son is already a vicious little queen at age 12. Meanwhile, Mattress-Back Margo looks bored and humps anything who comes within a three-foot radius since, as she repeatedly points out, her "pendulum" swings both ways. It doesn't take long for the Elstons to break out with the toy roulette wheel and begin spouse-swapping in earnest. There's bullet bras, there's ugly bedspreads, there's a fistfight under the sprinklers, there's too much other trash to list here. A fine, fine film.

Worse than you could imagine

My wife will be happy to tell you that I watch a lot of bad movies, but usually in the genre of "so bad that they're good." The first movie in this series fell into that category, but this sequel moved the "bad" needle way past the "camp" point to the point of no return.

The plot is paper-thin, the dubbing is awful, the sets, rear projections, models, and special effects are grade-school level, and most of the actors are unbearable. The "funny" Italian duo (who I guess were big Italian stars...the short one reminds me vaguely of Larry Storch) never even APPROACH funny, especially with their dubbed voices. (Why do bad movies like this always use voice actors who use cartoon voices rather than normal speech?) You know the movie is in trouble when the director calls for sped-up action (a la Benny Hill).

Vincent Price, who would do anything for money, floats above the cesspool to some degree, especially when he's hamming it up straight to the camera. The other saving feature is Les Baxter's generic 60s score, with whiffs of the Tijuana Brass. If you survive to the end, you'll hear one of the worst closing themes since "The Green Slime."

Political and human crises

The Taviani brothers are known for their humanistic and "neo-realistic" approach of film-making, using non-professional actors, location shoots, natural lighting and special attention given to "the people" as protagonists. Their cinema can be qualified as "political", since most of their films deal with abuse of power, corruption, poverty, but also suffering.

Highly political indeed, "The Subversives" ("I Sovversivi") which the Taviani brothers directed in 1967 is nevertheless quite different from "Padre Padrone" and "La notte di San Lorenzo". The film combines actual footage of a Communist leader's funeral, Palmiero Togliatti (who died in 1964), with the story of four people for whom the death marks a major turning point in their political futures. The film takes an episodic approach to chronicle the different effects the leader's death has upon these people. As the four stories intermingle, we follow Ettore, a Venezuelan radical who abandons the wealthy Italian woman he loves to go back to his country and help his cause, Ludovico, an ailing filmmaker who finds out that art alone is not enough, Giulia, a woman who embarks upon a lesbian affair with a former mistress of her husband (who happens to be a leader of the Italian Communist party), and Ermanno, a philosophy graduate who breaks up with his past.

"I Sovversivi", which documents the crisis of the Italian left wing after the death of Togliatti through these characters, is not really a must-see, but a watchable film for all those who like Elio Petri's late stuff and Pasolini political films. The others may find this talkative film a bit boring or hard to identify with, especially if you don't know anything about contemporary Italian/European politics.

Uninspired Sarno occultism

Another of Sarno's occult-themed erotic films, this is not one of his great successes, although it is watchable and does have its moments. The very abrupt editing, some poor performances, and the rather uninspired plot twists betray that Sarno was pretty much marking time. In fact, the empowering earrings idea is taken straight from his first film. There's a little more groping and nudity than usual, and some oddly affecting echoes of Bergman's "Persona", which was released in the same year. It's no surprise that the director was soon off to Sweden to refresh his significant well of talent.

Excellent Spy Thriller

I saw this movie many years ago on the late late show and thought it was an outstanding film about espionage in Saigon during the Vietnam War. The acting is very good with Joseph Cotten and Martha Hyer heading a fine cast. It is truly an unusual film as I don't know of any other movies which deal with the subject of spying in Saigon during Viet Nam. It was made in 1967 and so was very topical at the time and is truly a walk down memory lane for those of us who living through it during the 1960s. Joseph Cotten plays an Army colonel who is trying to find out who the spy is and Martha Hyer plays a computer programmer whose husband is the spy. It keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. I would like to see this movie come out on VHS or DVD. It is definitely worth watching.

Review :

I worked on this film

I grew up in Bay Saint Louis Mississippi. My Mother was makeup artist for the Little Theatre there(mid fifties).Under her influence I did my first role there(in my mid teens). The best character actor with the group was a man by the name of Mark Solomen. He helped coach me in my first role.At the time, he had just read what he said was the best western novel he had ever read.He ended up giving me the book. It was an original hard bound version called "Night Of The Tiger". I agreed it was a great novel even though it was the author's first attempt. At the time, I had no way of knowing that through a most unique set of circumstances I would end up launching a career in films myself(on Yancy Derringer, in 1958).Because I am a good horseman as well as a western type(6'4"anglo),by the mid sixties I was a seasoned veteran of the westerns of the era in both TV and feature films. In the early sixties I became friends with Chuck connors, and ended up working for him as standin and horseback double on some of his western projects including Rifleman, Cowboy in africa, and Branded. It was when we were doing the Branded series, and the time came for us to shut down for hiaetus.I was told we would be doing a movie with a thirty day shooting schedule in the meantime, and that I would shortly be called in to do make up and costume tests for Chuck,on lot three at MGM,with a skeleton crew. When that day came,I reported to the Paramount Sunset lot where I got into a stretch limo with all the key personnel including director, producer(Andrew Fenady),makeup artist, costumer etc. On the way to MGM the producer and director were discussing how meaty some of the main character's dialogue was. As they quoted him it began to sound familiar to me so I turned to andy(the producer)and asked what's the name of this film. I could'nt believe it when he said "Night Of The Tiger". Needless to say I related the above story to him. It turns out he had found the paperback version in a west hollywood supermarket while his wife was buying groceries. And of course he responded to the book the same as Mark Solomen had all those years earlier back home, and he went right out and bought the movie rights. On the first day of production I brought the book with me and gifted Andy with it. Andrew Fenady was one of the youngest and most brilliant producers I have ever known. In fact he and Nick adams created Johnny Yuma "the rebel". Who else could have pulled together such a cast for a "quickie" western. There can be no question but that this cast was drawn to the project by the power of the story. Imagine,Bill Bixby,Jim Mc Arthur,Claude Akins,Paul fix,Michael Renny, etc. The only thing I disagreed with Andy on was the change of title. He felt that Night Of The Tiger sounded like a jungle movie. This film remains in my top ten favorite westerns (with some of clint eastwood's spagetti westerns). It is also one of the most unique coincidences of my life.

Strange surprise from Mexico

In 1968, legendary horror icons John Carradine and Basil Rathbone traveled to Mexico to film "Autopsia De Un Fantasma", a low-budget horror movie that went to become a Cult film due to its cast. By strange reasons (some state that Carradine's career was experiencing a dry spell at the time), Carradine stayed after that and made four low-budget horror films for producer Luis Enrique Vergara. In Filmica Vergara Productions, Carradine would face Mexican wrestler Mil Máscaras in "Pacto Diabólico" ("Diabolical Pact") and "Enigma De Muerte" ("Secret of Death"), as well as playing the old Count Dracula one more time in "Las Vampiras" ("The Vampire Girls"), but the best of the four films would be the last one, an odd slasher with sci-fi undertones named "La Señora Muerte" ("Mrs. Death").

"La Señora Muerte" is the story of Marlene (Regina Torné), a successful fashion designer who is deeply in love with his husband, Dr. Andrés (Victor Junco) and has a life of happiness. However, this soon comes to a sudden end when Andrés has a fatal heart attack due to Cancer. Before collapsing, Andrés asks Marlene to take him to Dr. Favel (John Carradine), as he will be the only one able to help her. In Dr. Favel's lair, the strange scientist attempts to bring back Andrés using Marlene's blood in a radioactive experiment that tragically fails, making Marlene's body "unstable" due to radiation (making her go from deformed creature to beautiful woman at moments). Favel thinks he needs larger amounts of women's blood, so now Marlene must kill for blood not only to return to normality, but also to save her husband's life.

At first sight, "La Señora Muerte" looks like a typical horror film about a mad scientist (with flashy machines and a hunchbacked assistant), however, after Marlene becomes mutated, the film leaves Dr. Favel and becomes a really original slasher were the focus is not on the victims, but on the killer herself. We really can see the progression of this female serial killer, as her first killings are exact and effective, but as guilt begins to corrode her, her spirit begins to crumble. Written by Ramón Obón, the film is a nice surprise, as the sudden change of tone (from sci-fi to slasher) is actually beneficial, and really sets the film apart from other examples of Mexican horror (it even feels as if it was written by two very different writers).

As the last film of Jaime Salvador (experienced Mexican director who started with the excellent "El Jorobado" back in 1943), the film could be seen as yet another example of the bad state of Mexican industry after the end of the "Golden Age of Mexican Cinema". While "La Señora Muerte" is not really a bad film, Salvador's execution of the script is very anachronistic at times (the scenes with John Carradine seem to be taken out of a 50s film and forced into the movie), although to his credit, some of the scenes of the "slasher part" of the film are very well crafted, in an almost Giallo style.

While John Carradine's presence is surprising, and gives the film the feeling of a rarity, his performance is kind of regular, and although somewhat effective, at times he feels definitely out of place (the bad way the script is structured in his scenes doesn't really help him). Still, he manages to be haunting at times, despite what he had to work with (and the awful Spanish dubbing his character suffers). Quite and opposite image is Regina Torné as Marlene, who really transmits the pain and the suffering of someone who is forced to kill to survive, almost like a modern vampire. The rest of the cast is pretty average and simply are there to do the job.

The main problem of "La Señora Muerte" is neither the low-budget nor Salvador's anachronistic direction, the real problem is that the movie feels as two very different films mixed together. What could had been an excellent Giallo style slasher suffers the inclusion of themes and motives of a 50s mad scientist tale, and the contrast between them is huge. While the "slasher part" is dark, creepy and almost elegant, the "mad scientist part" has bright colors, bad special effects and hammy acting; and is this sharp contrast between them what in the end almost kills the film, as it feels as if the mad scientist story arc was included just to get Carradine in the movie.

"La Señora Muerte" is an oddity not only because of the inclusion of John Carradine in the cast, but also because of the strange way the film is crafted, as well as the inventive slasher story arc it has. While it would be easy to discard it as another 60s bad horror (as the first scenes seem to point out), it becomes into a different kind of beast past the wacky intro. A lost obscure gem that deserves at least more recognition. 6/10

Two Movies In One

Wonderful, engrossing film, which does not hold much promise, as regards substance, in the early stages. About one-third of the way through the film, it begins to expand in scope from a superficial study of Bardot's burned-out marriage and love life, and a seemingly frivolous trek from Paris to London for Bardot and cohorts who are on a modeling assignment, to a complex, detailed unfolding of how life becomes complicated when one encounters social temptation, which blossoms into genuine passion, on the road.

Bardot displays a multi-faceted screen talent, as she personifies beauty and allure, to go with emotion and vulnerability, as she becomes entangled in the biggest crisis of her life - developing feelings and involvement with a man who is not her controlling, dispassionate husband, and who actually takes his attraction for Bardot to fever pitch. This brings Bardot to the threshold of major decision time, and she, seemingly, is overwhelmed and rendered indecisive by her dilemma.

This film represents a departure from the many Bardot films which stereotype and caricature her as a flirtatious, shallow "sex kitten." In fact, there is no stereotyping and little comedic humor in evidence, here, as Bardot takes on a serious role with remarkable ease and professionalism, making one wish she had been challenged to this extent, in her earlier films. Or was she just too young, prior to 1967, when, in her early 30's, she fulfilled the considerable talent and promise of her youth?

Bond goes East.

This particular 007 entry (which was intended to be Sean Connery's last before he would agreed to return one more time for his sixth shot as 006 in 'Diamonds are Forever (1971)' and lets not the forget the unofficial 'Never Say Never Again' in 1983) was the first Bond film I encountered and from that it has always remained a total favourite. "You Live Only Twice" we see Bond travel to the land of the rising sun (Japan) in what is quite an expansive concept (dazzling set-designs with spectacular non-stop action) and very well-budgeted effort that lingers on a extremely comic-book-like tone (thanks largely to Roald Dahl's industriously well-guided screenplay that plays its cards close to the chest) with its characters, atmospherics and set-pieces that for me would make it one of the most creative and exciting inclusions to the series.

Bond heads to Japan racing to uncover the true mastermind behind the space-jacking that could see another world war, as British sources believe that the mysterious rocket ship which has seized American and Russian space shuttles originates from there, but those countries believe otherwise than each other for the acts.

Couple of things which made it more the memorable would be that it's the first chance we get to see arch villain SPECTRE Agent #1 Ernst Blofeld's face, than just the hand stroking the cat… although the first hour we get enough of that. It's a devilishly meaty Donald Pleasence who just seemed the part of Blofeld. Now who didn't love the hidden lair that was in an inactive volcano, and of course Blofeld's pool of pet piranhas. The inventive gadget novelty was really making a mark, just look the deadly mini-copter named 'Nelly' and the dangerous effects of smoking around others. Strangely enough the (witty) script seemed to spit out a few self-knowing quips involving cigarettes, which became rather odd. Director Lewis Gilbert (who would go on to control the very similar in story-structure "The Spy Who Loved Me" and then following that the plain goofy "Moonraker") does a tersely capable job with a fast moving pace that shifted from one well organized set-piece to another (like the chase on-top of a rooftop in a fishing docks that's masterfully captured by cinematographer Freddie Young) to finally finish on a barnstorming climax (with none other than ninjas) and then a familiarly fitting final frame. Sean Connery might look a little tired (a bit funny trying to make himself look like Japanese under make-up), but remains just as charismatic and fittingly lean when it came to getting down and dirty (Bond and his tussle with Blofeld's massive henchman Hans comes to mind). The bond girls shape up nicely in the form of Akiko Wakabayashi, Mie Hama and the stunning German redhead Karin Dor. Tetsurô Tanba was good as Bond's Japanese counterpart. Bernard Lee, Lois Maxwell and Desmond Llewelyn treat us to their iconic roles. John Barry's classy music score has a smoothly oriental touch, which can get actively copious when called for and theme song "You Only Live Twice" is enticingly sung by Nancy Sinatra.

Aside from the writing, it's not too bad...

My summary was facetious. Without good writing, a film simply isn't worth seeing--which pretty much sums up my opinion on "Woman Times Seven". It's very poorly written--quite uneven and at times annoying. The director didn't help any, as the film lacks subtlety and simply is a chore to watch. My only reason to watch it is that Peter Sellers was in it--but barely.

Shirley MacLaine stars in seven different vignettes as a woman living in Europe. The shorts are supposedly funny (which they aren't) as well as a bit bawdy. I real felt sorry for the actress, as she was far too talented to be in such a lousy film. In fact, my wife kept asking me "why are you watching that STUPID film"--until finally I realized she was right and turned off this dreadful mess.

An Oddity in the Spaghetti Western Genre.

"The Belle Starr Story" (1968) is, to my knowledge, the only Spaghetti Western ever directed by a woman, Lina Wertmüller (who was the first female to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Direction, for "Seven Beauties" [1976]). This fact somewhat overshadows this frankly bizarre movie that should probably be seen by fans so they can say at least "I've seen it!".

The screenplay by Piero Cristofani is merely passable: Belle Starr (Elsa Martinelli) meets Larry Blackie (a fine George Eastman) during a card game, commencing a love/hate relationship coming to a head when both try and steal a diamond shipment from right underneath the noses of the Pinkertons.

The middle of the film is taken up by long flashbacks to Belle Starr's past (which feature the ever reliable Robert Woods. He was originally going to have more screen time than he does, but he fell out with Wertmüller and thus his role was shortened); these are good scenes, but they rather unbalance the film and put the pacing off. The acting is mostly good, with Bruno Corazzari doing wonders in his small role. The direction is, like the cinematography and editing, solid but not inspired. Over all, an interesting oddity in the harsh desert of Spaghetti Westerns that aficionado's will want to watch.

Anne Welles, a bright, brash young New England college grad leaves her Peyton Place-ish small town and heads for Broadway, where she hopes to find an exciting job and sophisticated men. During her misadventures in Manhattan and, later, Hollywood, she shares experiences with two other young hopefuls: Jennifer North, a statuesque, Monroe-ish actress who wants to be accepted as a human being, but is regarded as a sex object by all the men she meets, and Neely O'Hara, a talented young actress who's accused of using devious means by a great older star (Helen Lawson) to reach the top, pulling an "All About Eve"-type deception in order to steal a good role away from her.

Review :

"My beautiful little dolls. Just one...and one more."

The film adaptation of Valley of the Dolls is stupid, empty, overly melodramatic...and a lot of fun!

Jacqueline Susann's 1966 novel is my all-time favorite, and her gritty, glossy pulp material was severely diluted for the big screen. That is the main problem. Too many punches are pulled, the characters are sweetened up, and a completely ridiculous happy ending (which Jackie hated) is substituted for the book's bleak, satisfying conclusion. Mark Robson's film has none of the spirit of its basis.

With that out of the way, the movie is very enjoyable for what it is: An unintentional laugh riot. The dialogue is hilarious and eminently quotable--"Boobies, boobies, boobies! Nothin' but boobies! Who needs 'em? I never had any! Didn't hurt me none!" Most of the supposedly "dramatic" and "touching" scenes are a scream. Patty Duke is priceless as the speech-slurring, tantrum-throwing, self-destructive Neely O'Hara. Watch her flailing around during the "It's Impossible" number; notice the embarrassing position of her beads. Barbara Parkins seems to have taken one Seconal too many before shooting, as she appears to be completely anesthetized. Susan Hayward gets to bellow a lot, fight with Duke, and get her wig thrown into a toilet in the most famous scene. The only one who comes off really well is Sharon Tate, a talent who never got the attention she deserved in life. Hers are the only genuinely affecting moments in the film, especially her final scene.

The candy-colored photography is good, beautifully capturing the glossy red capsules taken at every turn. The hair and fashions are glamorous--and so is the hairspray can! Dionne Warwick sings the beautiful theme, and the rest of the songs are enjoyably silly. I have the soundtrack LP--TWO copies! In conclusion, the ultimate camp classic! I'm off to take another doll now....

Review :

Gruesome alright, but really ridiculous also

The Gruesome Twosome is a lot like any other Herschell Gordon Lewis film in that it features a ridiculous plot line, a plethora of useless performances, buckets of gore and some real nasty sequences. As usual, the director sets out his plot and it doesn't go anywhere from there. There aren't any twists in this film and what you see is very much what you get. While this simple formula is fun, it is rather monotonous also; and if you've seen a few other HG movies prior to seeing this one (as I had), it's safe to say that there isn't all that much here. The film kicks off with a suitably demented scene that sees two head models with wigs having a conversation with each other. From there, we learn that a wig maker's shop is getting its realistic hair straight from women's heads, as the old woman who runs the shop employs her retarded son to scalp the young women who comes looking to move into the abandoned apartment next door. The piece is made more ridiculous by the way that the old lady talks to Napoleon; who just happens to be a big stuffed cat!

I'm never really sure if HG Lewis movies are meant to be bad, or if the director is just grossly talentless. The acting is so bad that it's arguably not even acting; between speaking parts, some of the actors are visibly laughing - I don't know if the whole thing is meant to be a joke. The film only lasts for the seventy or so minutes, and so you'd expect that even a plot as basic as this one would be able to be stretched; but the Godfather of Gore obviously didn't know what to do with it, meaning that way over half of the film is made up of useless scenes that add nothing to the plot and serve only in making the whole piece more weird. HG movies have a sort of otherworldly feel about them stemming from the fact that they are so inept; nobody in real life acts like the people in HG movies do, and this movie adheres to that styling. The characters are non-existent and the way they react to the local murders is purely stupid. The murder scenes themselves are grisly as usual, but as is the case with everything else in this film; they're impossible to take seriously. Overall, this really is a terrible movie; but there's something about HG movies that make them better than most trash, and while I won't argue with bad words against this film; I did enjoy watching it.
